Abstract

1326924 Character printers NORTEC COMPUTER DEVICES Inc 1 Sept 1970 [12 Sept 1969] 41739/70 Heading G4H A transducer for use in a character printer comprises a first ferromagnetic polepiece 48, a second ferromagnetic polepiece 50, a coil 58 and a permanent magnet 62 whereby variation in the reluctance in the magnetic path between the polepieces produce voltages across the coil. Characters 38, character position indicators 42 and font indicators 33 are etched on a magnetic stainless steel band 14 moved at high speed adjacent a document which is printed by hammers adapted to press the document against the characters. Two transducers are shown in a housing 21, one for sensing the indicators 44 and one for sensing the indicators 42 to control the time of actuation of the print hammers. The reluctance of the magnetic path is lowest when an indicium 42 is directly below the pole 54 and the change in reluctance as the indicia move generates current pulses in the coil 58. The magnet is made of powdered barium ferrite vulcanized in rubber and the polepieces are made of iron.
