Abstract

1,025,379. Pens for recording instruments; selective printing. PAILLARD S.A. Nov. 16, 1964 [Dec. 17, 1963], No. 46488/64. Headings B6F and B6P. Between the nozzle 6 of a writing instrument of the type wherein a jet of ink is produced by an electrostatic field and a reservoir 1, a pump 4, Fig. 1, is provided which includes a piston 14 of magnetizable material adapted to move inside a glass cylinder 7 under the action of magnetic attraction exerted by a field winding 15. The clearance between the piston and cylinder wall is sufficiently large to allow ink to flow past the piston without forcing ink from the nozzle 6. A stop member 11 prevents the piston from rising above a predetermined position so that the piston always remains in a position relative to the field winding where the force is substantially constant for a constant current. This force is desirably equal to twice the weight of the piston, so that the piston rises at a specific terminal velocity in the cylinder due to the magnetic attraction, and falls at the same velocity due to gravity. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), a permanent magnetic field attracts the piston into its uppermost position, equivalent to the lowermost position in Fig. 1, and a field winding is used to attract the piston to its lowermost position.
