Abstract
1326787 Digital position measurement WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 30 Sept 1970 [31 Oct 1969] 46425/70 Heading G4H [Also in Divisions G1 and H2] A system for detecting an arc and for locating the origin of the arc along a transmission line 10, e.g. a waveguide, comprises a directional coupler 18 and a peak detector 20 to sense the voltage peaks of the standing wave as the standing wave moves with the arc towards the source 12, the standing wave being produced by a combination of the outgoing energy from the source 12 and the reflected energy from the arc front. The output from the detector 20 is applied through a filter to a counter 21 which counts the peaks of the standing wave and through a divide-by-two circuit 25 provides an output to an indicator 28 representative of the number of wavelengths of the standing wave to pass the coupler 10 so that the indicator 28 may be scaled to indicate the distance to the fault.
