Abstract

1,120,305. Electric selective signalling. OPTOMECHANISMS, Inc. 18 March, 1966, No. 12001/66. Heading G4H. Light from a source S, (Fig. 1) transmitted via a lens L 1 , prisms G, C 1 and a glass plate E to a further prism C 2 carried on a movable object X is delayed by the glass plate E by an amount of one sixth of a wavelength in areas 1 and 6 and by one third of a wavelength in areas 2 and 5 so that light waves from the areas 1, 6; 2, 5; and 3, 4; fed to photomultipliers F 1 , F 2 , F 3 are each out of phase with the others by one third of a fringe. The outputs P1, P2, P3 (Fig. 2) from the photomultipliers F1, F2, F3 respectively are combined to give three pairs of signals, each pair being 90 degrees apart in phase and each pair being separated in phase by 120 degrees from the others. The pairs of outputs e.g. A, B are squared and fed through pulse formers 12, 14, 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, each pulse output e.g. Ap, Bp being combined both additively and subtractively with the other square waveform in the pair, i.e. Bs and As respectively, so that the direction of movement of the object may be determined. The outputs from the summation network are connected via signal level detectors to a reversible counter 17. The output from the counter may be used for automatic read out on punched tape, punched cards or magnetic tape.
