1284876 Selective signalling NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 14 Jan. 1970 [15 Nov 1968] 54364/68 Heading G4H In a system for counting optical fringes in which a counter is driven forwards or backwards according to the phase relationship of two sinusoidal signals X, Y, signals are generated by AND gates 25 to 28 for the four possible coincidence states XY, X#Y, ##XY, #XY of which the two pairs of adjacent signals ##XY, #XY and X#Y, XY set and reset a respective one of bi-stable circuits 29, 30, the states of which are combined by AND gates 32, 33 to set or reset a third bistable circuit 35 whose output B or B indicates the direction of count on line 36. Once per cycle of the states XY, XY, XY, XY bi-stable circuit 37 or 38, depending on the direction of count, is set and reset to provide a count pulse via OR gate 39. AND gate 42 provides a pulse that would be lost on changing direction.
