Abstract

1326694 Method of erecting towers; jack MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 4 May 1971 13083/71 Headings B8B and B8J A method of constructing a smokestack 15 supported by a surrounding tower 1 comprises the steps of fixing the lowermost part of the tower to a foundation, mounting a hoisting device within this tower part, erecting the uppermost part of the smokestack and removably mounting hoisting means 10 on top thereof, raising said uppermost part by the hoisting device, adding the next uppermost part of the smokestack to the bottom of the uppermost part and resting the connected parts on the foundation, raising the next highest part of the tower by the hoisting means and adding it to the lowermost tower part, and thereafter raising the connected smokestack parts and continuing the sequence described until the stack is completed. The hoisting device which may be either mounted in guide parts 2 secured to the tower or mounted in a structure independent of the tower, comprises at least a pair of double acting hydraulic jacks carrying transverse clinching jacks at their ends for engagement with apertures along the parts 2, so that the device may effectively walk up or down the interior of the parts, a lifting ring for supporting the smokestack, being supported at the upper ends of the jacks. A trolley 9 is used for moving smokestack sections into position within the tower, and a lifting turnbuckle 13 is provided on the tower for fine positioning of the smokestack during the fixing of another section thereto.
