Abstract
1326549 Puffing tobacco F M C CORP 3 Nov 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 52155/70 Heading A2C [Also in Division F4] To reduce the weight of tobacco necessary to produce a cigarette of a given size, dry shredded tobacco is expanded by wetting with water to swell the fibres, freezing the soaked fibres, and at least partially freeze-drying the frozen fibres in air at substantially atmospheric pressure, and having a wet bulb temperature lower than the dry bulb temperature and below the freezing point of the water soaked tobacco. The dry, (10-13% moisture) tobacco T1 may be delivered by a conveyor 12 onto an endless wire-mesh conveyor belt 10 and wetted by sprinklers 13; alternatively the conveyor 12 may deliver the tobacco into a tank of water, and the conveyor belt 10 may be extended downwards at an angle into the water to pick up the floating tobacco. The wet (70-80% moisture) tobacco T2 is carried by the belt 10 through a freezing chamber 14 through which air is passed at 32F or lower, e.g. 0F. The frozen tobacco T3 passes through a freeze-drying chamber 15 through which air (at a relative humidity <10% and a temperature about 30F) is passed by means of a blower 20. The air is cooled to -20F by a condenser 21 and heated by electric heaters 26; alternatively the . air may be passed through a dessicant bed comprising silica gel or molecular sieves. The tobacco T4 passes with less than 10% moisture into a second drying chamber 30 through which is circulated air at 100F and 10% relative humidity. The fully dry tobacco T5 is passed into a humidifying chamber 31 through which air at 80F and 80% relative humidity is passed to produce tobacco with 10-13% moisture.
