Abstract

1326494 Mantensitic reinforced iron base alloys HITACHI Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 March 1970] 25068/71 Heading C7D A mantensite reinforced Fe base alloy is formed by contacting the Fe base alloy with carbon or non- metallic carbonareous material e.g. foil or paper arranged in a predetermined pattern, heat treating in a non oxygen atmosphere and then quenching so that an orientated mantensite structure as formed in accordance with the predetermined pattern. The carbon, e.g. as fibres may be placed in grooves 2 in a steel plate 1 and then sealed with a top flat plate 1A prior to heat treating e.g. at 800‹C and then quenching Fig. 1 (not shown). Alternatively the carbon may be placed in holes drilled in the steel base or laid on a flat base in any required pattern with the bases stacked one on the other (Fig. 7). A laminated structure may be formed by interleaving carbon fibre cloth or paper sheets 3 between steel sheets 1 (Fig. 8) a tubular structure can be produced by filling the bores of steel or iron tubes 1 with carbon 3 and welding the tubes together prior to heat treatment (Fig. 9). The assembly of carbon and iron base can be worked e.g. rolled prior to heat treatment.
