Abstract

1326000 pH Indicative polymers DAINICHISEIKA COLOR & CHEMICALS MFG 25 Nov 1971 [25 Nov 1970] 54808/71 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C5] A pH indicative polymer in which a polymeric group is bonded to a pH indicator and which sharply changes colour at a specific range of pH is prepared by any one of the following processes. (A) A pH indicator having a radical capable of condensation or addition condensation, is condensed with a polymer or polymerizable monomer having a suitable radical. (B) A pH indicator having a diazonium radical is admixed with an α, #-ethylenic unsaturated monomer and the monomer is addition polymerized using the pH indicator having a diazonium radical as a polymerization initiator. (C) A pH indicator having α,#-ethylenic unsaturated radical is mixed with any α,#-ethylenic unsaturated monomer and is addition polymerized therewith. In examples: (I) thymolphthalein-4-carbamide polyethylene glycol is prepared by process (A), the polyethylene glycol reactant having a molecular weight of 4000, the colour change being blue (alkaline solution) to reddish-brown (acid solution) over pH 8À9 to 9À5. (II) Co-condensate of p-xylenol-4-carboxy-phthalein-naphthalene sulphonic acid-formaldehyde-Rhodamine B (15 : 74 : 11 : 0À1) is prepared by process (A), the colour change is blue (alkaline solution) to red (acid solution) over pH 8À8 to 9.5. (III) Dibromothymolphthalein bonding copolymer of acrylic acid-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (1 : 2 : 2) is prepared by process (B), the colour change is bright blue (alkali) to colourless (acid) over pH 8À5 to 9À5. (IV) Dibramo-4- copolymer of methacrylamidephthalein-acrylamide-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (1 : 2 : 2) is prepared by method (C), the colour change is bright blue (alkali) to colourless (acid) over the pH 8À5 to 9À5. (V) Co-condensate of dibromophenol - 3,4,5,6 - tetrachlorophthalein - melamine - formaldehyde - Rhodamine B (8 : 47 : 45 : 0À12) is prepared by method (A), the colour change is blue (alkali) to red (acid) over pH of 10À5 to 9À5. (VI) Co-condensate of p-xylenol-4- carboxyphthalein - naphthalene sulphonic acid-formaldehyde (15 : 74 : 11), the colour change is blue (alkali) to colourless (acid) over pH of 8À8 to 9À5.
