Abstract
1325771 Aerials STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd 19 April 1971 [27 Feb 1970] 9673/70 Heading H4A In a method for sampling the current flowing in a radiating element, a notch or slot is provided in the element and is coupled by a transmission line and matching means to a utilization means. As described, a unipole aerial comprises a metallic cylinder 10 supported above a larger grounded metallic cylinder 11. A coaxial feeder 13 is brought up through the cylinder 11 and is connected to it and to the cylinder 10. A transverse slot 14 is cut in the cylinder 11, for current sampling purposes, and a monitoring coaxial cable 15 is connected thereto. A resistor having the same magnitude as the characteristic impedance of the cable 15 is connected either in series or in parallel with said cable, to provide matching. When in series, the resistor may either be located at the slot or at a distance of (#/2 - #) therefrom, where # = wavelength at the mean frequency of operation and # = a correction for the inductance of the slot. When in parallel, the resistor is located at a distance of (#/4 - #) from the slot (Fig. 2, not shown). In another embodiment, the invention is applied to a dipole aerial (Fig. 1, not shown).
