Abstract

1325522 Electric arc furnaces WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 14 Jan 1971 [21 Jan 1970] 1888/71 Heading H5H An electric arc furnace electrode has a permanent ring magnet 105 located within the hollow arcing tip 104, defining fluid passageways 106 for the electrode coolant and causing the arc to rotate. A downstream electrode is similarly formed but with a nozzle 129 through which the gas, having entered through ports 112, 113 and been heated by the arc, exhausts. In Fig. 4, two ring magnets 71<SP>1</SP>, 72<SP>1</SP> are located within the electrode and are separated by diamagnetic spacer 73<SP>1</SP>, e.g. of epoxy resin. A ceramic coating 83<SP>1</SP> covers much of the electrode, leaving an annular arcing surface 93. A melt 30 has in this figure replaced the second electrode of the arc furnace of Fig. 5. In Fig. 6 (not shown), a plurality of bar magnets replace the ring magnet of Fig. 5.
