Abstract

1324080 Pistons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 30 Nov 1970 [15 Dec 1969] 60996/69 Heading F2T A piston for a syringe, metering pump or valve comprises a head capped by a pliable outer sheath 1 having an annular groove 8 formed on its inner surface, and a resilient annular supporting member 4 which is held by, or is formed integrally with, the head and is locatable within the groove so as to provide a resilient support for the sheath and to prevent withdrawal of the head from the sheath. The sheath may be made of P.T.F.E., polychlorotrifluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride, polyvinylidene fluoride and copolymers of P.T.F.E. containing ethylene or hexafluoropropene; fillers of glass fibres, mica or metal oxides may be added. Preferably, the supporting member 4 is an elastomeric O-ring which is compressed between screw-threaded parts 2, 3 to distend the wall of the sheath radially-outwards into sealing contact with the cylinder bore in which the piston slides. In an alternative arrangement, the diameter of the piston is made greater than the bore such that upon inserting the piston into the bore, the sheath is compressed and where the portion of the sheath is supported by the supporting member, compression of the sheath is resiliently-resisted and the portion is urged against the bore to provide the seal. As applied to a fluid flow control valve, e.g. globe valve, the closed end of the sheath engages the valve seat.
