1324043 Aromatic carboxylic acid sulphonates VYZKUMNY USTAV ORGANICKYCH SYNTEZ 7 June 1971 [5 June 1970] 19219/71 Heading C2C A cyclic carboxylic acid sulphonate is obtained by forming a reaction mixture which comprises (a) a sulphonic acid of the formula wherein Ar is an aromatic or heteroaromatic residue; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are H or straight or branched chain (C 1 to C 4 ) alkyl groups, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together form a fused non-aromatic ring, Q is a halogen atom, alkoxy, NO 2 , CN, CH 3 CONH-, COOR wherein R is H or C 1 to C 4 alkyl, -CONRR or -COR group, y is 0 or an integer from 1 to 3, x is an integer from 1 to 4, and wherein at least one of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is a straight or branched chain C 1 to C 4 alkyl group; (b) a solvent having a dielectric constant greater than 2 at the temperature of the reaction mixture; and (c) a salt of an acid, said salt being derived from an acid having a pK value greater than the pK value of the sulphonic acid of the above general formula; and treating at atmospheric pressure the reaction mixture thus formed with a gas containing free O 2 or with pure O 2 in the presence of a catalyst comprising cobalt acetate, manganese acetate and ammonium bromide. Specified solvents are acetic acid, acetic anhydride, formamide, DMF, tetramethylurea, acetonitrile and nitromethane. Examples are given for the preparation of various mono- and di-carboxy benzene sulphonic acid salts and of 2-carboxynaphthalene- 6-sulphonic acid monosodium salt.
