Abstract

1323945 Fluid-dynamic and friction brakes acting on the same wheel; fluid-pressure control KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 29 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969] 51560/70 Headings F2E and F2F A friction brake 3, 4, 5 and a fluid-dynamic brake 14, in combination, exert respective braking torques on one wheel axle 1 when the combination is in use, the fluid-dynamic brake being mounted coaxially with the wheel axle and having its rotor 15 fixed to the wheel axle to rotate therewith. Both brakes are operable hydraulically or pneumatically. The friction brake shown is a spot-type disc brake. Preferably the disc brake is pressurized only via a reducing valve 13, the complete system being such that under certain conditions the fluid-dynamic brake provides the sole braking torque. In operation, when brake control valve 18 is operated, causing actuation of brake 14, the braking torque produced thereby, and consequently the pressure in the outlet duct 19 from it, depends on the speed of rotation of axle 1. Reducing-valve 13 then supplies fluid to fluid supply line 12, leading to the disc brake, at a pressure corresponding to that in primary line 16 reduced by an amount proportional to the fluid pressure in duct 19. When the speed of rotation exceeds a certain value the fluid pressure in duct 19 is so high that fluid supply line 12 is virtually without pressure, so the fluid-dynamic brake 14 acts alone. As the speed falls, and duct 19 pressure falls, disc brake 3, 4, 5 also comes into action.
