Abstract
1346193 Fluid pressure braking; hydrodynamic and friction brakes KNORR-BREMSE GmbH 19 April 1971 [9 April 1970] 26700/71 Headings F2E and F2F In a fluid pressure braking system, particularly for rail vehicles, in which wheels 2 are braked by friction members engaging the rims thereof, and by a hydrodynamic brake mounted on a shaft 1 between a given pair of wheels, a valve 16 is provided between the line supplying fluid pressure to friction brake actuators 30 and a line 23 leading to the pressure chamber 24 of the hydrodynamic brake, to control slip of the wheel. During normal running of the vehicle a second rotor 6 rotates with a first rotor 4. When a valve 14 is actuated to admit pressure into a line 13 a motor cylinder 11, causes through an H-linkage 10, friction members 9 to brake rotor 6 and the hydrodynamic brake to retard shaft 1. Pressure from line 13 is also admitted to a chamber 15 of valve 16 thereby depressing a piston 17 and seating a valve 29. Fluid then passes through tubular valve stem 25, chamber 26 and pipe 19 into the actuator 30. When the pressure in line 23 is sufficient a piston 21 connected to piston 17 causes valve stem 25 to unseat valve member 27 thereby venting actuator 30 to atmosphere through a chamber 29. With decreasing braking action of hydrodynamic brake 5 as wheels 2 are retarded there is a correspondingly increasing pressure admission to pipe 19 and braking action of the friction members of the wheel rims. To release the brakes pipe 13 is vented by means of valve 14 so that admission chamber 12 of brake cylinder 11 is also vented thereby lifting shoes 9, freeing rotor 6 and releasing actuators 30. Coolers may be provided to dissipate heat from the hydrodynamic brake 5.
