Abstract

1378995 Fluid pressure brakes KNORRBREMSE GmbH 16 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12893/73 Heading F2F A braking arrangement for a rail vehicle wheel 4 has an eddy current disc brake comprising a stator 15, a rotor 14 and electromagnets 16 actuated individually or in groups such as in pairs by pressure switches 13 arranged to operate at different pressure levels by the air pressure of a separate friction brake system, the torque on the eddy current brake acting to regulate the friction brake pressure. For a braking operation, reduction in pressure in a main air pipe 6 results in a brake control valve 7 being actuated to permit air pressure from a reservoir 9 to pass via lines 8, 10 to actuate one or more of the switches 13 according to the degree of braking set by the air pressure. The torque of the eddy current brake is transmitted via a support 19 to a pressure converter 20 fixed to the vehicle frame whereby a piston 27 thereof is caused to move rightwardly to unseat a valve plate 26 and permit air pressure from reservoir 9 to pass via lines 33, 34 to a chamber 35 of a triple valve 11. The pressure established in chamber 35 biases a piston 40 leftwardly in opposition to the rightwardly acting pressure on a piston 44 coupled thereto through a valve tube 41, which pressure is established in a chamber 36 connected to control line 10. When the pressure in chamber 36 exceeds that in chamber 35, pistons 44, 40 move rightwardly whereby valve tube 41 unseats a valve plate 48 allowing air pressure to pass from line 10 through chambers 37, 39 and line 38 to operate brake cylinder 3. The pressure building-up in chamber 39 restores equilibrium across pistons 40, 41 and thereby producing a specific braking torque. As the torque generated by the eddy current brake diminishes when the wheel decelerates the force on torque support 19 decreases so that valve tube is lifted, by the pressure in chamber 21, from valve plate 26 whereby chambers 21 and 35 are vented through a throttle 31. The pressure in chamber 36 then displaces valve tube 41 rightwardly to once again unseat valve plate 48 and apply pressure to brake cylinder 3. In this manner decreasing braking torque of the eddy current brake is compensated by the higher braking torque generated by the friction brake. In the event of failure of the eddy current brake full braking pressure is applied to the brake cylinder 3.
