Abstract

1,061,151. Spring-applied, fluid-pressure released brakes. FRANK G. HOUGH CO. April 28, 1964, No. 17525/64. Headings F2D, F2E and F2F. A parking brake for a vehicle comprises a brake band 31 having a lining 32 applied to a drum 30 on the vehicle drive or propeller shaft 13 by a spring 43 acting via a piston 36 in cylinder 35 on a rod 37 to which a free end 34 of the band is connected, the brake being released by hydraulic fluid supplied by the control circuit of an hydraulic drive transmission of the vehicle to act on piston 36 in opposition to spring 43 whenever hydraulic fluid is fed to the hydraulic transmission control circuit via a control valve 18. Valve 18 is operated manually to cause hydraulic fluid under pressure from a pump 20 to pass to either a forward drive actuator 15 or a reverse actuator 16 via respective pipes 17, 19 which are also connected to opposite ends of a shuttle valve 51, 52. The shuttle valve moves in response to applied hydraulic pressure to seal off the non-pressurized pipe and communicate the pressure via check valve 49 to cylinder 35 to release the brake. When the supply of hydraulic fluid is cut off by the valve 18 or by stopping of the pump 20 fluid returns from cylinder 35 via a constriction 48 by-passing the check valve, so that the brake is applied gradually.
