Inserting wire and like metal nails.-A machine for driving nails, tacks &c. comprises a hopper 17 for the loose nails &c. co-operating with an adjustable rotatable truncated cone 10. The stems of the nails passing into an annular space between the two, and the heads being supported by a ledge 16. The nails slide in single file between adjustable plates 23 to a notched separator oscillated by a handle 31, which also oscillates a member 35 having a recess 34 which receives one nail at a time from the separator. A driver 41 is raised by a pinion 43 gearing with a rack 42 and carried by a drum 45 in which is a spring. A handle 46 contacts with a stop 47, raises the rack, and compresses the spring until the handle is forced away from the stop 47 by a fixed cam 48. The spring then causes the freed drum 45 to drive the rack and driver 41 downwards on to a nail which was fed into a guide 38 when the driver was raised. A handle 20 enables the operator to steady the machine. The driving-mechanism is adjustable about a shaft 32 for varying the angle at which the nails &c. are driven into the work, and is clamped in adjusted position by a wing-screw 53. A gauge 56 may be provided. According to the Provisional Specification, the hopper 17 may have a shutter for feeding the tacks into the space between the hopper and the cone; the driver 41 is depressed by hand and may be returned by a spring; rollers on the gauge 56 may release tacks at spaced intervals: and the cone 10 may be rotated automatically, e.g. by gearing from the rollers.
