Abstract

1323796 Irradiating liquids CONTROLEX CORP OF AMERICA 19 April 1971 [16 June 1970] 26269/71 Heading H5R Liquid is irradiated in the form of a freefalling annular stream 47 spaced from an unsheathed radiation source-e.g. ultra-violet or infra-red lamps 36. As shown, an inlet conduit 16 for the liquid and for the supply cables 17 for the radiation source pass through the side of the receptacle 10 for the irradiated liquid, and coaxially up the removable dome 13, which may be of aluminium, stainless steel, or a plastics material provided with a reflective coating. The upstanding inlet conduit 60 terminates at its upper end in a block 25 having a plurality of upwardly inclined passages 30 which lead into the tapered annular space 45, from which the liquid issues in an outwardly projected stream 47 of 1 to 2 mm. thickness. In order to oxidize undesired organic components in the stream, oxygen may be injected into the interior of the dome, by a conduit passing through the side of the apparatus and preferably terminating adjacent the lower end of the lamps 36 (Fig. 4, not shown), mesh filled aperture 82 in the wall of the dome preventing undue build up of gaspressure. To enhance contact between the liquid and the atmosphere within the dome, a mesh screen or perforated basket containing spheroidal particles may be supported upon an annular lip projecting inwardly from the wall of receptacle 10, to intercept the falling liquid and fragment it. (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown). Reference is made to the use of the method in disinfecting liquids, in sewage treatment, and for catalysing chemical reactions.
