Abstract

1323689 Flame-proof viscose filaments COURTAULDS Ltd 10 Dec 1970 [13 Jan 1970] 60444/69 Heading B5B [Also in Division C3] Flame-retardant regenerated cellulose filaments are prepared by adding to a viscose spinning solution an acylic straight or branched chain halogenated alkane of general formula C n H( 2n+2-m )X m , where n is in the range 6 to 20, m is in the range 2 to 25 and 2n + 2 # m and X is Br or a mixture of Br and Cl which is predominantly bromine, and spinning the viscose into a H 2 SO 4 regeneration bath to form filaments. Preferably the spinning solution contains up to 30% by weight of the halogenated alkane which, suitably, contains between 10 and 14 carbon atoms. The spinning solution may also contain tricresylphosphate or tris(2,3-dibromopropyl) phosphate, preferably in an amount of between 5% and 10% by weight based on the weight of cellulose. Examples relate to the spinning of viscose solutions containing halogenated alkanes prepared by brominating chlorinated paraffin fractions which are predominantly C 6 -C 10 , C 12 , C 14 -C 17 , and C 18 with or without the above mentioned phosphates into H 2 SO 4 coagulation baths containing ZnSO 4 and Na 2 SO 4 .
