Abstract

1,128,976. γ-Hydroxy sulphonates. MONSANTO CO. 15 Dec., 1965 [15 Dec., 1964], No. 53315/65. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C5] Novel compounds of the formula where R, R<SP>1</SP> are hydrogen, an organic hydrophobic group having 1 to 21 carbon atoms, an alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or aminoalkyl group having up to 4 carbon atoms, the total number of carbon atoms in R and R<SP>1</SP> being between 7 and 21, A is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, carbamido or C 1-4 haloalkyl group, B is hydrogen, halogen, or an alkyl, haloalkyl, or acyloxy group having up to 4 carbon atoms or a cyano group, and M is a hydrogen, ammonium, alkali or alkaline earth metal cation, are prepared by (a) reacting an appropriate Grignard reagent with #-chloropropionaldehyde, followed by hydrolysis and treatment with sulphite ions or (b) reacting an appropriate acid chloride with an olefin in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, followed by addition of bisulphite ion and reduction with hydrogen or (c) the hydrolysis of the corresponding γ-sultone. The γ-hydroxy sulphonates may be used as detergents.
