Abstract

1323618 Semi-conductor devices F HOFFMAN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 13 Dec 1971 [17 Feb 1971] 57797/71 Heading H1K [Also in Division H4] A device for sensing the energy distribution in a field of ultrasonic radiation comprises a piezoelectric layer, charge-sensitive components distributed in an array on the layer, and a pickup arrangement for deriving from the components electrical signals representing the ultrasonic energy level at different points of the field. As shown the device comprises an array of field-effect transistors formed by vapourcoating on a plastics foil or glass plate 1. The piezoelectric material is polycrystalline CdS as a 10-50 Á thick coating 2 and a 1 Á thick coating 5. Drain 3, source 4 and gate 6 electrodes are some hundreds of Angstroms thick. Individual transistors are addressable by means of shift register pulses applied to two orthogonal sets of parallel conductors, one set being connected to the source electrodes in each column of the array, the other set being connected to the gates in each row of the array. The array output signal is taken from a resistor connecting all the drain electrodes to earth and is fed to a television-type cathode ray tube display. The device may be used in direct acoustic imaging of an object or in acoustic holography.
