Abstract

1323579 Heating billets and slabs SOC ITALIANA IMPIANTI SpA 18 Nov 1970 [18 Nov 1969] 54902/70 Heading F4B The upper-and undersides O and U respectively of slabs or billets M travelling on cooled slide rails 5 through the heating zone A of a pusher furnace 1, are differentially heated by radiant roof and under-floor burners 7, 8 respectively, so that in an initial section of a subsequent soaking zone B baving a ceramic hearth 4 and heated only by burners 7, the surface temperature of the underside U is lower and that of the upper side O is higher than the required ejection temperature, whereby a thermal flow from the upper to the underside is induced in the soaking zone. Preferably at the end of the heating zone A the underside surface temperature is close to but slightly higher than the ejection temperature, though lower than the upperside surface temperature, the underside surface temperature being lowered to below the ejection temperature in the initial section of soaking zone B by heat absorbtion by the ceramic hearth 4. In the initial section of the soaking zone B the upperside to surface temperature is first raised to and then maintained at a higher level, whilst in a final section of tha soaking zone the heating of the upperside O is reduced or stopped.
