1323262 Cooking appliances W M BARDEAU 9 March 1971 6398/71 Heading A4D A cooking appliance comprises a heatconductive base plate 38, preferably having a controlled heater 30, a heat-conductive cover platen 52, preferably having a controlled heater 32, and movable to matingly overlie the platen 38 to provide an internal food-receiving cavity (60), Fig.3 (not shown), opening downwardly peripherally, through a passage (58), Fig.3 (not shown) between a wall 54 and the inner surface of a channel 40, into the channel 40 which preferably discharges collected grease and juice through a spout 44 into a collecting vessel 46, the channel 40 and the wall 54 extending around at least part of the periphery of platen 38 and platen 52 respectively. Two such appliances may be combined with base platens on a common basehousing and cover platens on upper housings individually pivoted to the base housing, springs being provided to retain the upper housings in a raised position. When platen 52 mates with platen 38, projections 56 on a flange 50 are supported on an outer wall 42 of channel 40. Alternatively, adjustable projections may be provided, or the projections 56 may be omitted if thin articles are to be cooked. The platens may be circular, rectangular or square, and are preferably coated with polytetrafluoroethylene. The platens and drainage channel may be inclined to the horizontal downwardly towards spout 44. The or each upper platen may be housed on an upper structure pivoted to a frame at locations spaced from the pivotal attachment of the frame to a base housing Fig. 9 (not shown) the upper structure being in substantial balance about its axis of pivoting to the frame. A rectangular base platen may be surrounded on three sides by the drainage channel and on the fourth side by an upstanding wall, the cover platen being surrounded by a depending wall on three sides and by a bearing wall on the fourth side, the depending wall engaging in the drainage channel and the bearing wall sealing against the upstanding wall when the platens mate, Fig.9-11 (not shown). The surface temperature of the platens is preferably about 400‹F.
