Abstract
1323041 Tidal valves COPLASTIX Ltd 30 March 1972 [2 Jan 1971] 195/71 Heading E1C [Also in Division F2] A tidal flap valve, which may be positioned in sea walls, in banks of tidal rivers or in banks of other water courses in which water level varies, comprises a plastics material frame 4 which is securable to a wall about an opening through which fluid is to flow and which .has hingedly secured thereto a flap valve member 8, the frame including a horizontally extending projection 5. The flap 8 comprises a sheath 16 of rigid polyvinyl chloride covered by skins of a suitable abrasion and impact resistant resin, the sheath 16 containing a shear resistant plastics foam 18, e.g. rigid-polyvinyl chloride foam, and a series of steel bars 20. The face of the flap facing the frame opening 3 has bonded thereto a foam rubber sealing element 22 which, in the closed position of the valve (shown), engages a sealing surface 28 which is so arranged as to have an inclined surface that tapers from a thickened lower portion upwardly until at an uppermost portion it merges with the surface of the frame proper. The flap 8 is hinged to the frame portion immediately below projection 5 by way of a flexible plastics material hinge 12, e.g. a hinge of non-cellular polyurethane. The hinge is securely anchored to the frame way of a bolt 10, a metal plate 11 and a plastics head 14, and to the flap by way of a bolt 24 engaging one of the steel bars 20 and a backing strip 26. The number of steel bars 20 contained in the flap is so selected as to render the overall density of the flap slightly greater than the density of the liquid prevailing in the region outside the flap.
