Abstract

Lever mechanism involving counterweights in buoyancy chambers to control the opening and closing of a gate in a weir or barrage, where the mechanism involves two interacting levers between the counterweight and hte gate and where position of the end of one lever is readily adjusted along the length of the other lever. The mechanism is for automatically opening the discharge gates if the upstream water level rises, and allows easy adjustment of the balance load of the counterweighted system and hence resetting of the water level at which the gate opens and closes. The design involves a flood gate pivotted along its base at th esill of the weir and moving from an angle of 45 degrees between lateral walls. Flexible rubber pref. neoprene (RTM) seals are used alongside the base and the ends of the gate. The base seal may be reinforced by metal slats to prevent it being excessively stretched by the hydrostatic pressure.
