Abstract

1322869 Counting apparatus FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 3 Dec 1971 56185/71 Headings G4A and G4D A counting circuit is provided with a memory whereby the original count will be restored after a period in which supply voltage is removed. Each of the four bi-stable stages 12 of each decade of a BCD counter feeding for instance a solid state display device (not shown) has its Q, Q outputs respectively connected to the set and reset windings 14, 15 of a bi-stable magnetic core 13. Whenever one of the stages 12 changes state one of the windings 14, 15 is momentarily energized through a transistor switch 19, 20 to similarly change the state of the respective core. When, after an interruption of the power supply, the bi-stable stages 12 are re-energized they are initially all reset to " 0 " condition the power supply to the switches 19, 20 being withheld during this operation to ensure that the cores remain unchanged. After a delay determined by a circuit 22 a switch 17 restores the supply to switches 19, 20 and also energizes a pulse generator 24. The latter issues a reset pulse to windings 25 on the cores causing all those in a " 1 " state to reset to " 0 " and at the same time to issue a pulse from their read out windings 26. These pulses are delayed by circuits 28 until the reset pulse on windings 25 has disappeared and then applied to the set inputs S of the respective bi-stable stages 12 to set appropriate ones to " 1 " state; those which are set issue a Q output which restores the respective cores to the original states so that the whole counter is restored to its condition prior to the power interruption. The counting circuit may be employed in an odometer for a vehicle. A transducer coupled to the wheels or transmission of the vehicle feeds pulses to the counter representing distance travelled. The counter feeds a digital display device which may comprise an electroluminescent material; similar display devices show other operating conditions of the vehicle such as speed, fuel, oil pressure &c.
