Abstract

1322741 Delivering sheets; collating apparatus MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 30 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 46591/70 Heading B8R An apparatus for distributing sheets in a predetermined manner, e.g. a collator, has a feeding device, e.g. horizontal opposed endless belts 101, 112 and a switch 123, for feeding sheets to one end of a conveyer comprising an opposed portion 41 of two conveyer belt means 44, 45, and a receiver 21 comprising a plurality of shelves with aligned inlet ends, for receiving sheets discharged from said conveyer, rollers 73 74, 49, 69 and 75, 46, 51 being provided to support said belt means and including a first roller set 69, 46 adjacent the feeding device and a second roller set 49, 51 adjacent said receiver, the sets each having at least two rollers with a nip therebetween with said belt means travelling through the nips with their exterior surfaces opposed in the portion 41, the length of this portion being adjustable by movement of one roller set, e.g. on a vertically movable carriage 54, past the shelf inlet ends. The receiver may comprise adjustable length shelves 22 having hold-down rollers 36 and a photo-electric sensor device 98, 99 which detects a sheet as it enters and actuates a carriage drive motor 95 to lower the roller set 49, 51 to the next shelf for deposition of a following sheet. Alternatively a number of sheets may be deposited in each shelf and when each shelf has received its sheets, switch 123 is activated to direct following sheets to an adjacent collator. The sheets may be conveyed from right to left, as illustrated in Fig. 1, by conveyer belts 101, 112, thus being inverted, or from left to right by the conveyer of an adjacent collator the sheets thus remaining right side up.
