1321977 Mixing apparatus FEINPRUF FEINMESS-UND PRUFGERATE GmbH 10 March 1971 6448/71 Heading B1C [Also in Division F1] A continuous laminar mixer for highly viscous media especially polymer spinning, melts has a first type mixing element comprising a rotatable toothed wheel 12 cooperating with flow passages 10 in a wall 9 separating chambers 3c, 3b, and a second type mixing element comprising a rotatable disc 7 having a flow passage 8 separating chambers 3b, 3a; the passage 8 is of the same order of magnitude as the inlet and outlet 6, 11 and is less than one-quarter of the cross sectional area of the chamber 3a, while the number of flow passages 10 preferably differs by unity from the number of flow passages 13 in the toothed wheel 12. There may be more than one first type mixing element and in another embodiment (see Fig. 4, not shown) the shaft (2') is partly hollow to form a chamber (3'g) the inlet (8') to which in the shaft wall forms the second dye mixing element. The foot of the shaft is toothed and in cooperation with a toothed spigot (9'a) forms a first type mixing element, a further first type mixing element consisting of a wall (9'b) between two annular chambers (3'e) and (3'f), having passages (10'b) cooperating with a toothed wheel (12'b). The number of flow passages in the spigot (9'a) is preferably less than the number in the foot of the shaft by an odd number, e.g. three or five. In a further embodiment (see Fig. 5, not shown) the apparatus is combined with a gear pump, one of the gear wheels (12") being the toothed wheel of the first mixing element. The pump outlet chamber (3"h) extends round a major portion of the gear wheel (12") periphery and provides access to the flow passages (10") in the wall (9") which extend all round wheel (12"). Flow through the embodiments of Figs. 1-4 may take place in either direction, and any embodiment may be combined in a unit with a spinning pump advantageously driven via a common shaft.
