Abstract

1321969 Selective printing CREED & CO Ltd 1 June 1972 25597/72 Heading B6F A needle printer comprises a U-section magnetic yoke 1, a magnetic member 7 rotatable between the arms 2, 3 of the yoke 1, means such as a coil 5 producing magnetic flux in the yoke, and a plurality of rigid conductive loops 8 each rigidly attached to a printing needle (not shown) and each associated with a switching device (9, Fig. 1b, not shown), the loops being positioned in a gap between the rotatable member 7 and an arm of the magnetic yoke 1, such that when a switching device is closed, eddy currents are induced in the associated loop 8, whereby the loop 8 and its associated printing needle are driven towards a record web (not shown). The loops 8 and the needles are mounted on a printing carriage displaceable along the length of the yoke 1 and including a field-concentrating pole piece 4. The coil 5 may be replaced by a permanent magnet (6<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 2, not shown), or the rotatable magnetic member may itself be a permanent magnet.
