Abstract

1321767 Purifying cymene USS ENGINEERS & CONSULTANTS Inc 12 Oct 1971 [12 Oct 1970] 47508/71 Heading C5E Cresol is removed from a mixture of cymene and cresol by neutralizing the mixture with an aqueous alkali metal salt of cresol, decanting the organic phase, distilling to remove some of the cresol impurity, washing the distilled phase with an aqueous caustic solution, e.g. NaOH, to form an alkali metal salt of the remaining cresol and decanting the aqueous phase containing the alkali metal cresylate, at least part of this aqueous phase being recycled to the neutralization step. The cresol removed in the distillation is mainly m and p cresols whereas ocresylate forms about 75% of the cresylate in the recycle stream.
