1410750 Production of bisphenol COMBINATUL PETROCHIMIC BORZESTI 13 May 1974 21108/74 Heading C2C The invention comprises a continuous process for the production of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- propane by the reaction of phenol with acetone in the presence of an acidic catalyst and ethyl mercaptan at a temperature of from 60 to 85‹ C., followed by removal of a light fraction from the reaction mixture by distillation and purification of the remaining reaction mixture, in which the reaction between phenol and acetone is carried out in a single stage, an aromatic hydrocarbon solvent is added to the reaction mixture obtained and azeotropic distillation is effected to remove a light fraction from the reaction mixture, and the remaining reaction mixture is subjected to solvent extraction to remove phenol therefrom.
