1321565 Purification of sodium hydroxide; hydrazine OSTERREICHISCHE STICKSTOFFWERKE AG 18 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970] 48446/71 Heading C1A An aqueous sodium hydroxide solution containing iron impurities is purified by passing an aqueous solution of the sodium hydroxide having a concentration of less than 40% by weight, through a filter zone containing a layer of at least 100 mm. thickness of mineral calcium carbonate having a particle size of 0À1 mm. to 5 mm., e.g. limestone, chalk, marble, for an average residence time of at least 15 mins. The purified sodium hydroxide is used in a process for manufacturing hydrazine which comprises reacting urea or ammonia with sodium hypochlorite in an alkaline medium produced by the sodium hydroxide.
