Abstract

1320915 Magnetostrictive transducers UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY 7 Oct 1970 [29 Oct 1969] 53079/69 Heading H4J A plurality of magnetostrictive members 6 is clustered around and polarized by a permanent magnet 2 and each magnetostrictive member 6 is encircled by its individual coil 9. The magnet 2 is urged by attraction towards a mild steel bolt 3 and is held between a stainless steel block 5 and a block 12. Each member 6 is a rod and is brazed into block 5. Earth connections to the coils 9 are made to common blocks 4a, 4b, of aluminium. Individual connections to the coils 9 are by mineral insulated cable 11. Six rods are provided. Each rod is of length equal to the operating wavelength # at room temperature. The coils 9 encircle a length #/4 of rod and the rear face of each coil 9 is a distance #/4 from the bottom of hole 14. Waves induced in the rods travel in both directions, forwards and rearwardly. The rearwardly travelling waves are reflected to join the forward waves in phase. The devices are for temperature measurement in nuclear reactors.
