Abstract

1,262,288. H.V.D.C. static converters. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 13 May, 1969 [16 May, 1968], No. 23304/68. Heading H2F. In an H.V.D.C. converter, groups 1 of thyristors in a series string are fired simultaneously from a common pulse generator 2 pulses from which are transmitted in the form of shock waves through solid insulating rods 4 of quartz or ceramic, to actuate firing circuits local to the thyristors. The pulses from 2 are converted to physical vibrations by piezo-electric or magneto-strictive transducers 3 and applied to the rods. Matched transducers 6 convert the rod's vibrations into electrical signals which actuate pulse generators 7 to simultaneously fire all of the thyristors through distributing and gating circuits 8. In a fractional arrangement (not illustrated) in which the thyristors are arranged in a helical stack, the signal transducers 6 may be arranged at intervals along the stack axis with rods 4 of equal length extending outwards from them to the transducers 3. Use may also be made of the structural members of the stack assembly e.g. the walls of an enveloping tank, insulating supports etc. for transmission of the physical vibrations. There may be a respective pulse generator 7, rod 4 and transducers for each thyristor. The transducers 3, 6 are matched to reduce resonance effects. The series strings of thyristors are connected to form a bridge network.
