Abstract
1320637 Moulding embossed ceramic tiles ACCENTILE Inc 14 Sept 1971 42743/71 Heading B5A Tiles with a decorative indented or embossed surface are made by placing clay powder 16 in a mould having side walls 20 and a bottom wall 18 with a solid elastomeric inert member 12 having a configured surface covering the bottom wall and in contact with the powder, compressing the powder, relatively displacing side and bottom walls to expose the compacted tile and insert, and pushing them across the mould bottom to effect removal from the mould. The tile and insert member are then separated and the tile is fired after any desired glazing, trimming or other finishing treatment. The insert member may, e.g. be of rubber. The usual spacing lugs and rear face ribs may be formed on the tile during compression. Conventional apparatus may be used and either the side walls may be raised and lowered, the bottom wall being kept stationary, as in the figure, or vice versa. The shaker box 54 for refilling the mould may be used as the sliding means to push the tile and insert member across the mould bottom when the latter has been moved into line with the top of the sidewalls. The impressed design may, it is stated, have portions exceeding 0À018 inch in depth and with walls inclined at more than 30 degrees to the surface of the tile.
