Abstract

1,158,223. Moulding bricks. CANNERTON BRICK CO. Ltd. 21 July, 1957, No. 33626/67, Heading B5A. A specially shaped building member, e.g. a brick, is prepared by moulding a generally rectangular block with at least one passage through the block from top to bottom and at least one channel in both the side surfaces. At least one channel is then formed in each of the top and bottom surfaces by pressing. As shown, the first mould comprises sides 1, carrying channel forming members 2 and a base 5 perforated to allow a piston to pass through from below. Vertical members 4 shape the passages through the block and a base 3 can slide over the members 4 to eject material from the mould. The mould is placed in a former which closes the sides and is filled with moulding material. Base 3 is then raised by a piston. The brick is then transferred to another mould mounted in a press, the mould comprising a base member 12 with channel forming members, a similar top member 10, side members to engage the channels already formed, movable core members 28 engaging the passages through the brick and a press box 16 surrounding the mould. The press comprises sliding platens 19, 20 moving in a rigid frame 17, 18 to which the press box 16 is mounted and core members 28 on a spring mounting 24, 25, 26. In operation the platens 19, 20 are raised so that the mould clears the press box 16. The brick is pushed into the mould cavity and is located on the end of core members 28. The platens are then lowered and pressure applied to the top platen 19, the bottom platen abutting against the fixed members 26 and 24. The brick is removed by raising the platens to a higher position than for loading and pushing the brick from the mould cavity. The channels are preferably moulded so that one or preferably two continuous channels extend right round the block and the channel on the sides of the block is dovetailed. Apparatus, e.g. a fixed cutter or rotating miller, may also be supplied to trim the channels to the desired shape.
