1319973 Stamping DAVY & UNITED ENG CO Ltd 28 May 1971 [13 June 1970] 28750/70 Heading B3Q A pendulum marker for marking moving articles has an adjustable mounting for the pendulum arm, one position of the mounting supporting the pendulum in the path of the articles to be marked and another position of the mounting limiting the pendulum to swinging above the path. In one form, Fig. 2, a cranked arm 13 is used which swings on a pivot 15 carried by a beam 16 on a pivot 17. A pin 21 on the arm is engaged by a lever 22 having a latch portion 27 for retaining the pin, Fig. 2 (not shown), when the arm is raised by impact with a billet 31. The arm 13 now returns to the vertical by rotation about the pin 21, as permitted by rotation of the beam 16 about its pivot 17. To release the arm for vertical movement into the path of the next billet, the lever 22 is turned about its pivot 23 by an actuator 25 operated by the tail of the marked billet. Alternatively, the pendulum may drop vertically on to the billet and be held by a stop with the arm vertical. When the pendulum falls clear of the moving billet the stop is disengaged, the leading end of the next billet to be marked may control operation of the cylinder 25, through a photo-electric cell on billet guides which are adjustable for billet size and so that the photo-cell moves further from the marking position as the guides are moved closer together, for smaller, faster billets. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the pendulum arm (13) is mounted direct on a solenoid or fluid-pressure actuator (41) which raises the pendulum (12) when this operates a switch (44) after impact. The actuator may be double-acting to assist in lowering the pendulum.
