Abstract

1319865 Automatic control of temperature D L RALL & D R HORNBAKER 5 Aug 1970 37717/70 Heading G3R [ Also in Divisions G1 and H1] Temperature detection apparatus comprises a sensor head 12 in which a heat flow sensor 18 a thermopile is mounted flush with a face 26, of the head, disposed adjacent to a heated moving sheet 28 so as to receive convected heat therefrom, a signal indicative of the heat flow being fed via a controller 54 to a solenoid valve 52 controlling flow of coolant through coils 16, or to a heater 14, whereby the head is brought to the same temperature as the sheet, when there will be no heat flow to the sensor 18, the temperature sensor 20, a thermocouple providing a measure of that temperature to an indicator 56. The heat flow sensor is potted in an epoxy resin (34) which fills a receptacle (36) Fig. 3 (not shown) in the underside of the head. A reflective aluminium coating (38) is provided over the face 26 to reflect incident radiant heat in an embodiment for use where the sheet is heated by radiation. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) the signal from the flow sensor 18 is applied to control the heating of the sheet 28 by means of controller (64) heater (44) and power source (48) whilst the sensor head is maintained at a predetermined value by the sensor 20, controller (56), solenoid valve 52 and heater 14. A further embodiment, for use in fluid media, Figs. 6-8 ( not shown) utilizes a further temperature sensor (70), identical with that 20, and connected in series with the heat flow sensor 18 and with a reference thermocouple junction (72) in an ice bath (74) the algebraic sum of the signals from the three sensors being applied to a controller (64) to maintain the fluid medium at a desired temperature which temperature is set by temperature sensor 20 in the manner described in the embodiment of Fig. 5 (not shown) .
