Abstract

1,246,670. Measuring fluid-flow electrically. CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD. Dec. 11, 1969 [Sept. 11, 1968], No.43222/68. Heading G1N. The flow-rate of a fluid through a tube is deter-, mined by measuring its cooling or heating effect on a temperature sensing probe 10 held against the tube and connected to a portable indicator unit 13 by a flexible connection 12. In an embodiment a thermocouple probe is held by a magnetic clamp against a locally pre-heated spot and signals 17 representing the temperature difference from a reference temperature are applied to a control unit together with timing signals, the rate of cooling being measured, either over a predetermined temperature drop, or over a predetermined time, and indicated at 21. The localized heating may be effected by radiant electric heater, induction heating, gas burner or propane torch. The heater may be mounted alongside the thermocouple in the probe, and energized at a standard rate during the measuring period. Alternatively, cooling instead of heating may be used, for example by a liquid spray or application of a cold mass. The heating may also be effected by causing a fluid at known temperature to flow through the tube. The method may be used for checking boiler tubes for blockages.
