Abstract

1319783 Calorifier; heating liquids in bulk McCALLUM & TODD Ltd 19 April 1971 [23 Dec 1969] 62719/69 Headings F4A and F4S A calorifier, primarily for hot water, includes a spherical or substantially spherical housing having an inlet 13 for fluid to be heated and an outlet 14 for heated fluid, and a heating element 15 extending radially into the housing at an inclined angle to the horizontal when the calorifier is located for use. The housing may comprise two hemispheres 2a and 2b and is divided by a partition 8 having apertures 32 into an upper storage chamber 9 and a lower heating chamber 10. The inlet 13 is positioned to discharge fluid on to the heating element 15 and on to a tubular pocket 34, Fig. 4, containing the sensor of a thermostat controlling the heating element, which may include a bank of U-tubes 16 for the passage of stem or hot water, or may be an electrical element. Also adjacent the inlet 13 is a duct 35 for the return of hot water to the housing. A pair of parallel baffle plates 31 flank the element 15. In a modification a tongue portion of the partition 8 inclines below and parallel to the heating element from an aperture in the partition, and supports two parallel baffle plates
