Abstract

1319542 Electrically colouring titanium surfaces F W LEWIS and J H CLAYTON 29 April 1971 [2 May 1970] 21186/70 Heading C7B A Ti surface is coloured by applying a filmforming solution e.g. of CusO 4 and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 to the surface by an applicator such as a brush or felt pad and an electric potential between the applicator and Ti to form a film e.g. of oxide on the surface, the potential being varied e. g. between 5 and 80 volts as the applicator is moved over the surface to vary the colour. Prior to forming the film, the surface may be chemically etched using photographic techniques, masking off parts of the surface to remain unetched. The applicator may be a paint brush dipped in the solution to which electrical connection is made via a metal ferrule.
