Abstract

A method of partly coating an electrically insulating surface (e.g. in a TV picture tube) with a graphite layer in which method a part of the surface which is to remain uncoated is covered with a film of a substance capable of being removed by heating it below 450 C., after which the film is dried and a graphite suspension provided on the part of the surface which is to be coated and also on the part which is to be finally not graphite coated but is covered with the film, the film then being removed by heating it to below 450 C after which the graphite remaining on the surface which is to remain uncoated is removed by brushing or wiping it away. The substance normally an aqueous suspension, is preferably such that the graphite suspension contracts to separate droplets. Polymethacrylate resin in nitrocellulose lacquer with a 4.5 cp viscosity may be introduced into a c.r.t. by raising vessel (3) to provide coating (7) (Figs. 1 and 2 not shown). Graphite suspension (10) is sprayed by the nozzle (9) into the c.r.t. on a horizontal lathe and then heated to 445 C. The edge of the graphite layer tails away (Fig. 4 not shown) reducing corona.
