Abstract

1319146 Asbestos fibres JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP 24 Nov 1970 [24 Nov 1969] 55706/70 Heading C1A An asbestos fibre with improved filtration characteristics is produced by applying a spray of an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate or suspended silica to asbestos fibre maintained in air suspension so as to deposit 0-4 to 4% by weight of alkali metal solids on the fibre and subsequently adding to the fibre 0À05 to 5% by weight of a non-foaming anionic dispersant (e.g. a sulphonic acid derivative), the weights being based on the dry weight of asbestos. The dispersant may be added as a dry powder or as an aqueous solution sprayed on to the asbestos. The fibres treated with silicate may be mixed with a cement and made into an aqueous slurry or paste and formed into a wet sheet from which asbestos-cement articles can be made. The dispersant is added to the fibres after the silicate and may be added before or after combination of the asbestos and cement.
