Abstract

1318862 Aquaria VORTEX (FISHERY EQUIPMENT) Ltd 22 June 1970 [20 March 1969] 14570/69 Heading A1A Apparatus for rearing fish comprises a main tank (not shown) containing water 10 having an outlet 11 covered by a filter 12 which prevents fish passing therethrough but allows water containing contaminants, both in solid and liquid form to pass into pipe 14 communicating with a filter chamber 15 and thence through an oxygenating or aerating chamber 28 containing a diffuser 33a back into the tank at pipe outlet 31. The filter chamber 15 contains filter elements 18-20 which prevent the passage of solid contaminants which fall into a sump chamber 34, and also remove bacteria from the water. A flushing tank 36 has an outlet pipe 44a to which chamber 34 is connected via a pipe 35 so that water flowing at high velocity down pipe 44a sucks in the water in pipe 35 together with the contaminants in chamber 34. Since water will be withdrawn in this manner from the recirculation system additional water is supplied to main tank from a reservoir tank 37. Fish food may be injected into the final duct section 30, or supplied directly into the tank. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), two separate duct systems (112) (113) are provided externally of the main tank (110), providing for the removal of solid and liquid contaminants respectively. It is possible to pass water which has been freed of solid contaminants through the liquid contaminant removal ducting. The duct system (113) may contain bacteriologically acting treatment means. In a further form of filter arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the water passes through a compartment (135) in which there is a water peamable endless belt (140) having vanes (153) forming pockets which trap solid contaminants which are discharged gravitationally when the pockets are inverted over a collecting tray (154).
