1317933 Traversing ZINSER-TEXTILMASCHINEN GmbH 22 July 1970 [22 July 1969] 35632/70 Heading D1J Package-end build-up is prevented in a winding machine where the yarn is traversed between rotating cam plates 16..19, whilst guided by slots 60 in a guide bar 57 (Fig. 6), by periodically radially displacing the cam plates to change the width of traverse. Two cam plates are radially slidably mounted on each of two spindles 43, and carry projections 37 (Fig. 4) engaging with an internally conical ring 40, axially slidable on the spindle by rollers 43, push-rods 45 (Fig. 2), rocker arms 47 and a cam 50 (Fig. 1, not shown). The rotation of the spindles is geared by sprockets 20, 21 and a chain to that of a package-driving roller 27 in an integer ratio. The roller 27 has chevron-shaped grooves 33 which during normal operation, when the cam plates are in their radially outermost positions, catch the thread as it nears its reversal points, and ensures substantially helical winding in these regions. An operation of the cam to retract the cam plates 16..19, the traverse length shortens beyond a point where the grooves 33 no longer catch the thread, which is therefore laid in a curve at the reversal regions until the cam plates ar extended once more. A pair of cam plates on one spindle may serve two winding stations, the spindle being located centrally between them.
