Abstract

1317912 Detection of traced quantities of material in a liquid carrier VARIAN ASSOCIATES 22 May 1970 [16 June 1969] 25005/70 Heading B1X [Also in Division E1] Trace quantities of material in a liquid carrier are detected by a method comprising separating the material from the carrier, by bringing the liquid carrier containing the material into contact with a first membrane separator, passing the material which diffuses through the first separator as a vapour into a carrier gaseous atmosphere, concentrating the vapourised material with respect to the carrier gas atmosphere by bringing the carrier gas containing the diffused material into contact with a second membrane separator and detecting the concentrated vapourised material which diffuses through the second separator. The apparatus shown comprise a first membrane separator 2 having membrane 3 for separating the material to be detected from its liquid carrier stream for entrainment in the carrier gas stream from 6 or in permanent gas also separated from the liquid, a second membrane separator 9 having membranes 7, 13 for concentrating the material to be detected in the gas stream and means 16 for analysing the gas stream. The liquid carrier may be water and the material to be detected may be an organic hydrocarbon of the general type characteristic of flavours and fragrances or of mineral oils, or organic contaminants resulting from movement of a vessel or fish or mammal through water. The membrane 3 may be 1 mil thick silicone rubber and may be coated with frease or wax. The analysing means may be a mass spectrometer.
