Abstract
1316692 Explosive and propellent compositions NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP 4 May 1970 21426/70 Heading ClD [Also in Divisions C2 and C3] A polymer of a compound of the formula where R is alkylene of 1 to 4 carbon atoms (see Division C2), is used as an energetic binder in explosive and propellent compositions. Prepolymerization of the monomer may be carried out using a Lewis acid catalyst and a hydroxygroup-containing initiating compound. The compositions also contain an oxidizing agent, a fuel, a curing agent, and bis-(2-fluoro-2,2-dinitroethyl) formal as an energetic plasticizer. The fuel may be powdered boron, Al, Mg, Be, or alloys of Al-B, Al-Mg, or Al-Cu, and the oxidizing agent ammonium, alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal salts of nitric, perchloric, or chloric acid. Various di- and poly-isocyanates are specified as suitable curing agents. Examples describe the preparation of propellent compositions in which aluminium powder is used as the fuel, ammonium perchlorate as the oxidizing agent, polymethylene polyphonylisocyanate as the curing agent, and ferric acetonyl acetate as a curing catalyst. Higher density impulse figures are obtained by using hydroxylamine perchlorate in place of ammonium perchlorate.
