Abstract

1,201,565. Explosive compositions. OLIN CORP. 13 Aug., 1968 [18 Aug., 1967], No. 38636/68. Heading ClD. [Also in Division F3] A primer pellet is made by volatilizing the liquid from a suspension of solid particles, comprising a binder and an explosive component consisting of a double salt of lead styphnate and lead nitroaminotetrazole, DDNP, lead azide, lead salts of dinitrophenol, dinitrocresol, picric acid, and styphnic acid, and the double salts thereof with lead acetate or lead proprionate, and the compositions disclosed in U.S.A. Specifications 3,310,569 and 3,321,343. The explosive may contain a proportion of PETN, nitroaminoguanidine, nitrosoguanidine, cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, dinitrotoluene, TNT, nitrocellulose, nitrostarch, erythritol tetranitrate, or mannitol hexanitrate. Tetrazene is used as a sensitizer. An oxidizing agent component consists of lead oxide, lead peroxide, ferric oxide, magnetic iron oxide, barium chromate or lead chromate; metal nitrates, permanganates, chlorates and perchlorates, and ammonium and substituted ammonium salts of oxidizing acids. A fuel component consists of aluminium flakes, magnesium, zirconium, titanium, zinc, iron, antimony, boron, silicon, ferrosilicon, calcium silicide, carbon, sulphur, red phosphorus, antimony sulphide, lead hypophosphite, lead thiocyanate or coal. The binder comprises a natural gum, shellac, rosin, calcium resinate, ester gum, methyl cellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, dextrin, polyvinyl-pyrrolidine, poly(ethylene oxide), polyvinyl alcohol, urea-formaldehyde, or melamine-formaldehyde polymers. The particle sizes do not normally exceed 60 Á, and for ingredients with a specific gravity over 2.5 not more than 15Á. The liquid in which the particles are suspended is distilled or de-ionized water, or an organic liquid having a b.p. of 65-200‹ C., e.g., hexane, cyclohexane, carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride, ethylene dibromide, trichloro-, tetrachloro- or pentachloro-ethane, dichloroethyl or dichloromethyl ether, ethanol, methoxyethanol, butyl alcohol and ethyl acetate.
