Abstract
1316666 Coated refractory particles MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 11 May 1970 [27 May 1969 7 Nov 1969] 22746/70 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A method of treating refractory particles to render them free flowing and suitable for use in the manufacture of moulds and cores for casting comprising mixing the refractory particles with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal silicate, in which the molar ratio of silica to alkali metal oxide is in the range 0.7 to 1.1, and a monohydric alcohol to deposit crystalline alkali metal silicate on the surface of the refractory particles. The preferred monohydric alcohol is methanol and the refractory particles may be metal particles or preferably siliceous sand. Optionally an inorganic salt is added to the mixture of aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate and refractory particles to assist deposition of the alkali metal silicate. The inorganic salt may be sodium chloride, potassium chloride, sodium aluminate, manganese sulphate, ammonium ferrous sulphate, potassium nitrate, potassium sulphate, aluminium sulphate, cadmium chloride, cupric chloride, ferrous chloride, chromium chloride, sodium sulphate, ferric chloride, soda lime, barium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, sodium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium nitrate or zinc chloride. The alkali metal silicate may be sodium metasilicate. The aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate may be obtained by using a water glass to which alkali is added to adjust the molar ratio to the desired value.
